S.T.E.P. stands for Special Techniques and Exercises for Paralysis. It has three main components:
Patterned Neural Activity RecruitmenT
“PNAR” excites the nervous system and creates involuntary and/or voluntary muscle contraction to re-create patterned neural activity.
Exercise-based Therapy
This uses exercise to put patients into extension anatomically correct positions circulating blood, bowel and bladder, as well as increasing muscle mass, bone density, function, coordination, and sensation.
Loadbearing
Using weight and gravity helps maintain and increase bone health and joint stability.
Who delivers the program?
The S.T.E.P. Method is delivered by Certified Paralysis Recovery Specialists.
All specialists demonstrate foundational skills/qualifications in exercise physiology, kinesiology, physical education and biomechanics. Specialists progress through four levels (I-IV) of certification, each with additional coursework, a competency-based exam; and hands-on client time.
